Art Of Change

A process for developing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

Since writing The Maintenance Scorecard several major organizations have adopted this approach. This has included companies in the infrastructure, utilities and manufacturing industries. It has been an incredible journey for myself and one that I have learned a lot from.

The reason for this post is because I thought that it would be good to detail the process that I generally use for setting up

Is this really for you?

Some of you reading this are quite happy in your present role, and you are satisfied with doing a good job and being paid fairly for that.

Some of you have aspirations to proceed to management, and then maybe to executive management, using reliability as a method to project your value into the organization.

And some of you, a small percentage of the people reading this, want to change the world. Some of us, not just you, are not satisfied until they have seen their influence written across major organizations throughout the world. And in today's labor market and economy, the ...

It is not enough to do a good job

Just about every single article you read on implementation of maintenance and asset reliability projects generally carries in it somewhere the issue of management support, or the lack thereof. In fact, over my career the number one issue (whine) that I hear from people is this lack of management support.

I riff about this a lot in my new boo. However, one of the underlying reasons that management are not supporting you is because they don't know what you are doing. Not really.

It is not enough to do a good job, not by a long shot. People have to know that you are doing a goo ...

RCM Management

If there are any of you out there who like to check out the originating documents of things, like RCM, for example, then I have just found a really good source of archival information.

It is called Storming Media and is the repository of documents that have been published by the Pentagon over its many years in operation.

This link (http://www.stormingmedia.us/search.html?q=RCM&search.x=12&search.y=17) will take you straight to the RCM section where there are a number of relatively famous case ...

Lean Manufacturing Maintenance

In the next few weeks I hope to finally submit my latest manuscript for a book that I have been working on across several continents, several years, and several projects. It has been an exhausting and exhilarating experience. I think it's pretty good.

It is called Lean Strategies for Asset Reliability, and as the title suggests the central theme is Lean M ...

Supply and demand: The resource crunch

How many times have you heard about the resource crunch in the U.S. and Western economies recently?

It's a hot topic these days. Almost every one of my clients is screaming that they cannot get the people they require. But the answers are right in front of us. Introduce apprenticeships, offer more money, improve conditions, look at real profit-sharing arrangements and so on ... if companies are really hurting then there are many (MANY) options out there.

Let's face it, if the statistics in the post on refining capac ...

Mapping Improvement

I found this easy to use graph in Google Docs, along with some other very powerful graphing functions.

This example is from the people that I have trained in RCM, and the facilitators I have trained.

The Greatest Lost Production Opportunity in History

As a sideline, I tend to have a lot of sidelines, I do a lot of data modeling using various graphing tools. This is because I am basically a very boring person. However - I have stumbled upon something very intriguing coming out of the Energy Information Administration. This department publishes the official government energy information for the USA.

Have a look at this motion chart below.

The first 100 days of the BIG project

So you have finally started the project. The money is approved, the products and consultants have been located, the contract has been let and you are already part way through your awareness program.

Failure in reliability and asset management programs is often traceable to key decisions that were made either during the sales cycle or within the first days of implementation. So here are some tips that may help you to avoid some of the common pitfalls during this period and ensure your project continues with the same level of corporate enthusiasm that it h ...

The Reliability Success Discussion Forum

Okay so we built this forum on LinkedIn a while ago to try to provide a non-commercial environment where reliability practitioners could network and discuss themes that mattered to them. (Forum - http://www.linkedin.com/e/gis/45240)

The results have been astounding. I think this is down to three issues fundamentally:

  • No anonymous snipers!! Everyone in there has to display their name - but emails are hidden from spammers! So if you are going to state something you need to have the courage of your convictions. (Great s ...
