Implementing

A process for developing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

Since writing The Maintenance Scorecard several major organizations have adopted this approach. This has included companies in the infrastructure, utilities and manufacturing industries. It has been an incredible journey for myself and one that I have learned a lot from.

The reason for this post is because I thought that it would be good to detail the process that I generally use for setting up

It is not enough to do a good job

Just about every single article you read on implementation of maintenance and asset reliability projects generally carries in it somewhere the issue of management support, or the lack thereof. In fact, over my career the number one issue (whine) that I hear from people is this lack of management support.

I riff about this a lot in my new boo. However, one of the underlying reasons that management are not supporting you is because they don't know what you are doing. Not really.

It is not enough to do a good job, not by a long shot. People have to know that you are doing a goo ...

Lean Manufacturing Maintenance

In the next few weeks I hope to finally submit my latest manuscript for a book that I have been working on across several continents, several years, and several projects. It has been an exhausting and exhilarating experience. I think it's pretty good.

It is called Lean Strategies for Asset Reliability, and as the title suggests the central theme is Lean M ...

The first 100 days of the BIG project

So you have finally started the project. The money is approved, the products and consultants have been located, the contract has been let and you are already part way through your awareness program.

Failure in reliability and asset management programs is often traceable to key decisions that were made either during the sales cycle or within the first days of implementation. So here are some tips that may help you to avoid some of the common pitfalls during this period and ensure your project continues with the same level of corporate enthusiasm that it h ...

Is Streamlined RCM worth the risk…

As the discipline of physical asset management matures we are seeing the subtle art of Streamlined RCM finally starting to recede.

And good riddance.

I am just back from an end of analysis presentation by a significant client of mine in the chemicals industry. They performed a rigorous analysis on a critical asset. Generally I don't like critical asset analyses because the potential for tangible benefits is reduced... but these guys did me proud today!

Their asset had previously been analyzed by a company using a relatively popular streamlined approach.

The result... Redu ...

The Secret to Maintenance Success

Ever wondered what makes the difference between everyone else and those who enjoy a prosperous and fruitful maintenance career?

Easy.. one word actually... Success!

Great, thanks a lot Daryl, why are you wasting my time telling me something I already know? But its true, nothing succeeds like success, and there is a secret to achieving success.

I wrote before that I play Guitar, and that I enjoy it a lot. Ever wonder why people will line up to see a great guitarist? Because there is a scarcity of really great guitarists right? And those who are "really great" are a joy to wa ...

Always darkest before the dawn

I recently read about a phenomena called "The Dip" in a book by Seth Godin. (Nothing to do with reliability) While a very simple concept, most brilliant ones are I have found, ,it describes exactly what occurs on most reliability projects - particularly on the big ones. ...

The Art of Implementing RCM

I am a passionate believer in RCM. Over the years I have come to the conclusion that it is a fundamental part of any maintenance, asset-management or risk-management program. But still I see companies struggle with the concepts, the implementation and how to embed the process as a permanent solution.

This is not an issue about RCM, it's an issue about change!

This is a list of tips I use regularly to help companies to place RCM at the heart of their asset management function.

1. Its not a project, its a program.

Ever noticed how methodologies like ...

The Art of Presenting - Part II

If you are going to actually master the Art of Presenting, then in my view the most important rule to understand is the Rule of Presence. (#1) If you are going to have a room enthralled, and if they are going to remember what you tell them, then you need to have a bit of a “wow” factor.

For those of you who are (ahem) cosmetically challenged like myself, then you will be pleased to know that creating a strong presence does not depend on your looks! Its an aura you generate. Check out some of the worlds really good presenters ...

The Curse of Criticality

Criticality is one of the most misapplied and misunderstood methodologies in a reliability practitioners arsenal today.

Personally I am absolutely astounded by the continual use of criticality approaches to select assets for an improvement process. Don't misunderstand me, I like the idea, and I believe it has a lot of very powerful uses in reliability. Just not as an asset selection process - and particularly not for RCM or any other form of maintenance strategy approach.

It goes like this... The newly trained RCM faciltiator takes the initiative to push forward the program by spending time ...
